The Silence Between the Peaks

The Silence Between the Peaks explores Steve Fagan’s connection to the mountains. In mountain landscapes he experiences a shift in perception: elevation sharpens attention, silence clears thought, and distance changes the way things are seen. This project grows from that experience and from an effort to better understand why the mountains affect him so deeply.

From the beginning, the project has been shaped by more than Steve’s perspective alone. A central part of the work is an invitation for others to reflect on how mountains have influenced their own lives. These contributions bring additional experiences and perspectives into the project.

Over the coming years, Steve will continue returning to the mountains — sometimes staying in remote alpine huts, sometimes traveling beyond established trails. The project grows from these experiences and from the people he meets along the way. Photography remains central to the work, documenting landscapes, encounters, and moments shaped by life in the mountains.

The work will lead to a photo book and documentary film that bring Steve’s reflections into conversation with the experiences shared by others. As the project develops, these contributions help shape its themes and deepen its understanding of what mountains mean in people’s lives.

If the mountains have shaped your life in any way, you are invited to contribute. Share a reflection, memory, photograph, or video about your connection to the mountains. Every contribution will be read and considered as part of the project.
